Le filiere del sistema agricolo per l'energia e l'efficienza energetica
2011
Increasing the use of renewable energies and Energy Efficiency offer significant opportunities for Italy to reduce fossil energy, greenhouse gas emissions and secure its energy supply. This report presents a brief analysis of the most important supply chains of the Agriculture system. Greatest attention is paid to the significant role that agriculture and its supply chains are likely to play in terms of bioenergy production and energy saving. Special attention is devoted to new agricultural activities like those associated with the reduction of vegetable food waste, the agrotourism, the urban agriculture, the plastic coverings and the greenhouses, the plant protection and the fertilizers. D…
Assessment of forest biomass derivable from the sustainable mana-gement of Mediterranean plantations in the Sicani mountains (Sicily)
2014
In view of an ecological and environmentally use of the biomass drew from forest operations, it is utterly important to well know the forest ecosystems characterizing the regional territory and in particular the pilot area of the Proforbiomed project. In this way it was possible to acquire specific information on the forest types in the area, its ecological and structural characteristics and the evolutionary dynamics. The information gathered have been fundamental in order to detect the most suitable forest management policies and interventions, able to put together the use of biomass and an increased of forest ecosystems stability. The studies carried out in the pilot area of the Proforbiom…
From the sustainable forest management to the short wood-energy supply chain: the experience of the ForBioEnergy project in the Madonie Natural Park
2019
The ForBioEnergy Project (Interreg MED Programme), implemented as part of a partnership between four countries of the MED Area (Italy, Spain, Croatia and Slovenia), assessed the possibility of producing bioenergy using biomass from the sustainable forest management in the protected areas of the Mediterranean. In Italy, the pilot protected area was the Madonie Natural Regional Park (Sicily). After the establishment of the protected area (in 1989), both for socio-economic reasons and for the regime of the constraints introduced, the silvicultural activities were almost completely abandoned. On the one hand, this has made it possible to reduce the excessive exploitation of forest resources and…
Energy and environmental assessment of residual bio-wastes management strategies
2021
Abstract This paper assesses the potential energy and environmental impacts of an anaerobic digester coupled with a combined heat and power plant powered with bio-wastes from the agri-food sector. The analysis is carried out through the Life Cycle Assessment methodology following a “cradle-to-grave” approach and is based mostly on primary data. The anaerobic digester - combined heat and power plant is analysed considering a twofold perspective: one more energy – oriented where the main function of the system is to generate renewable electricity and a waste – oriented one in which the main function is treating bio-wastes. In addition, the environmental indirect effects related to potential c…
Commercial Biogas Plants: Lessons for Ukraine
2020
Ukraine has enough biomass resources for biogas production. However, this energy potential is not used sufficiently. This research is aimed at examining the current experience of commercial biogas systems in the Europe Union and its adaptation for Ukraine. Special attention was paid to economic indicators, such as specific investment costs, production costs (biogas, biomethane, and electricity), and incentives. Using statistical data for the European Union and Ukraine, the biogas potential for Ukraine (based on European experience) was determined. The economic competitiveness of biogas production was evaluated compared to alternatives, such as photovoltaic, wind power, biomass, conventional…
Selection of microrganism for the mobilization of cellulolityc agricultural biomass for energy production
2012
Selection of microorganisms for the mobilization of cellulolytic agricultural biomass for energy production. R. Di Bonito, D. Taschini, C. Viola, Campi otti C.A. Unit Energy Efficiency in Agriculure, ENEA Casaccia, Roma, Italy The production of biofuels as renewable energy source could significantly reduce the negati ve impact of fossil fuels. However, this activity has resulted in increasing land cultivation specifically with carbohydrate-rich crops for energy production, and resulting shortage of crop production for food . The use of residual agricultural biomass as a substrate for biofuels or biogas production could improve the sustainabi lity of the bio-energy production but sti li requ…
